A microphone inside the equipment enclosure, recording short clips on a schedule. A failing fan bearing, a relay chattering, a transformer that has started to buzz, rain on the lid, something loose in the wind — none of these show up in a temperature reading, and all of them are obvious in ten seconds of audio.
Captures are short and scheduled rather than continuous, and a lock file means the recorder and the analysis module never fight over the one USB audio device.
